Stuff White People Like #38
I loved the show as soon as I saw it. My then girlfriend(soon to be wife) and I would make a point to watch it every week. It was the first time I really appreciated quality writing, things that were actually funny, (not slapstick or crude) and the fact that there were so many plot twists and how crazy the plot could be but it would always come together as quickly as it would fall apart. That is what I loved about the show it never ended on a happy note where the problems were solved (like all of the 90's sitcoms) it always ended with a new problem which would keep us waiting for the next episode. Then I got married and the show was soon canceled. Until now I never really put the two events together but there could be something to that……
The main reason a “white” person loves Arrested Development so much is that it was canceled. Just to prove how white I am here are some other shows that should have never been canceled.
Studio 60
Sports Night
Notes from the Underbelly
The Loop
Knights of Prosperity
You should notice that these shows only fall into 2 catogories, low budget ABC shows that never made it very far, or failed Aaron Sorkin projects. The reason is I think ABC will take a chance on a different kind of comedy so things with actual humor will get made, and people know Sorkin can deliver but his delivery is on such a high level that most of America doesn’t get the jokes so it stumbles in the ratings. What can you do.
Here are some shows with good writing that you could be watching.
The Big Bang Theory (they have made 2 seasons so it should be around for a while)
Kath and Kim (could be canceled, 50-50 I would say)
30 Rock (NBC little baby has finally caught on, but the best writing was in season one)
The Office (Do I even have to put it on the list?)
Parks and Recreation (haven’t even seen it and I can already tell)
Burn Notice (Its on USA so I never get to watch it but I do like the writing style)
Extras (HBO It is fast becoming our new favorite show)
Flight of the Conchords (HBO good writing through song)
Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia (FX not so much writing as yelling)

Stuff White People #31 Snowboarding
Snowboarding
This one should be obvious. I skied from the age of 9-16 or so and then started snowboarding. I found snowboarding to be all of the fun, and much less work of skiing. I am such a white person I keep a log and some would (if it wasn’t in a spread sheet form) call it a Skiing/Snowboarding journal which is also a white person thing. Also as a white person I feel it is my duty to inform other about snowboarding, equipment, resorts, and to settle debates between skiers, and snowboarders on the advantages and disadvantages of each. I quickly point out that my father snowboards half the day and then finishes on skis so there must be merit to each sport.
When talking to me at a party snowboarding is a great topic, items to discuss, snow quality, lift lines, and planning our next trip. Topic to avoid would “be if you love it so much why don’t you go more often?” or “why does all you gear look like it was purchased in the late 90’s.” I might brag about how I have had my snow pants since sophomore year of high school, but every time I do I die a little inside.
